Reclaiming Self-Worth: A Journey from Love’s Influence to Inner Strength
I won’t speak about anything I have not experienced, and today, I’m excited to share my personal journey about self-worth and its deep connection to love. Grasping your self-worth is essential for personal growth and emotional well-being. So, let’s take a trip down memory lane to my first experience with love.

Fast forward a few years, and I found myself in my first real relationship, experiencing for the first time that intoxicating feeling of love. I was enamoured with the idea! Yet, a lingering question plagued me: why did I feel worse after every breakup? I wasn't just upset about losing my partner; I was struggling with real blows to my self-worth. This realization started to set in as my first relationship came to an end, underlining the concept of Self-Determination Theory, which is all about how we find motivation within ourselves to build our self-esteem.
In my upbringing, love was rarely discussed openly. Most expressions of affection I saw were on occasions like Valentine’s Day, where actions were the primary message. This absence of conversation left me unprepared for the emotional rollercoaster that followed each breakup.
Believe it or not, I fancied myself a romantic. I often wrote heartfelt letters to my partner before going out, eagerly waiting to see their reactions as a boost to my self-esteem. This led to a pattern where I sought validation through my relationships. When I jumped into my second relationship, and many more after that, I started each with a flicker of hope but often found myself feeling inadequate soon after. As the saying goes, “You can’t change the world until you change yourself.” I kept asking myself why I consistently felt worthless. Though I could express my thoughts to the public, I often silenced my true feelings to maintain my partner's comfort and happiness. This desire for approval led to significant inner turmoil.

Ultimately, I realized I needed to prioritize my self-worth over external influences like money or status. I worked hard to reach financial stability, thinking that material wealth might protect me from feelings of inadequacy. But I soon learned that I was still susceptible to the sting of comparison and negativity from others. This mirrors the principles of Cognitive Dissonance Theory, which asserts that we experience discomfort when our self-beliefs clash with our actions.
Over time, I transformed from that confident child—who once illuminated every room—with my head held high, to someone whose self-worth seemed to rise and fall based on my partner's moods. Even when I was madly in love, my self-esteem was frayed by external opinions. It got so intense that I even thought about making drastic changes, such as shaving my head—a symbol of control that I felt slipping away with my partner's negative influence. One chilly night, out of impulse, I told my partner, “I would cut my hair for you. I’ve been thinking about it.” I knew deep down that this was a lie to hide my true feelings. I justified it by saying to myself, “It’s fine; you’re doing it for love,” while avoiding facing my reality.

So, how did I find my happiness and rebuild my self-worth without letting negative influences dictate my thoughts? This journey has shown me that it’s crucial to make conscious and deliberate choices about your self-worth development and I’m thrilled to say, I still have my hair! That relationship, which I was desperate to keep, ultimately fizzled out quicker than others. After the breakup, I often found myself asking, “Were you really going to cut your hair off?” This nagging question stuck with me, and I grew bitter, realizing that if the relationship had lasted, I might have actually done it. After hitting rock bottom, I came to understand that the core of my discontent wasn't my outward confidence; it stemmed from my internal self-worth.
Many people confuse confidence with self-worth, but they are not the same! “Happiness is not something ready-made. It comes from your own actions,” said the Dalai Lama, and I learned that I could be confident but still lack a sense of true self-worth. My breakthrough moment arrived when I realized that seeking validation externally wasn’t the answer. I needed to look inward and confront the tough reality: my self-worth was nearly depleted.

So, how do we spark that sense of self-worth back to life? Start by identifying it. How do you value yourself? Are you worth $100, $2,500, or even more? Be specific about this; it might feel daunting and even discouraging at first, but this acknowledgment can pave the way for growth. Within those feelings of disappointment lies a golden opportunity for development, aligning with principles from Positive Psychology, which stress focusing on personal strengths.
Taking a good, hard look at your self-worth provides a blank canvas to rebuild from the ground up. Self-reflection and mindful understanding of your experiences are powerful tools. “The greatest discovery of my generation is that a human being can alter his life by altering his attitudes,” stated William James. By recognizing my self-worth, I’ve enabled myself to filter out influences and choices that don’t serve my best interests.

This growth journey isn’t straightforward, and I’m still a work in progress! Life has a way of testing us, and external factors can sway us off course. But understanding your self-worth lays down the foundation for making better decisions. Once you truly grasp your intrinsic value, you'll see that there’s no price tag on the people and experiences you allow into your life, which helps you navigate the positive and negative impacts more effectively.
As you navigate your personal growth journey, always remember: your self-worth is vital. Understanding and nurturing it is foundational to feeling good inside.
