Navigating the Complexities of Entitlement: A Guide for Parents
As someone who grew up in a family of four as the only child of the opposite gender, I have witnessed the nuances of entitlement first-hand. In a loving yet structured household, my parents, though not wealthy, provided everything I truly needed. However, as a young person, I wasn’t always aware of this; I often disguised my wants as needs. The turning point for me was realizing the sacrifices my parents made to fulfil my so-called needs. This understanding transformed my outlook and allowed me to see that entitlement arose from misunderstanding not just my circumstances, but also the value of effort.
My epiphany was profound: getting what I wanted required me to put in genuine effort, dispelling the common fear many children have about being told "no." Inspired by the words of Stephen Covey, "We’re not human doings; we’re human beings," I came to appreciate the essence of being responsible rather than entitled. This experience taught me valuable lessons that I now share at Your Self Coach Space / Empowered by Divine Strength
Here are some actionable steps that parents can take to cultivate responsibility in their children and reduce feelings of entitlement:
1. Foster Awareness of Sacrifice:
As a parent, you have the opportunity to shape your child’s understanding of effort and sacrifice. Share stories of your hard work and personal sacrifices in your daily life. Explain that every privilege comes with a cost. Instead of shielding them from life’s realities, use open conversations to help them appreciate where their comfort comes from.
2. Encourage Empathy Through Experiences:
Engage your children in volunteer work or community service. Such experiences will expose them to different life circumstances and the value of hard work. Research published in "Developmental Psychology" shows that children involved in service projects develop greater empathy and gratitude—qualities that can combat entitlement. This is a principle I often emphasize at Your Self Coach Space / Empowered by Divine Strength
3. Identify Interests and Draw Parallels:
Recognize what your children are passionate about and use those interests to teach valuable life lessons. Share your own challenges in pursuing what you wanted, highlighting themes of perseverance and creativity. This approach shows them that while material desires may be fleeting, the joy of working toward meaningful accomplishments is far more fulfilling.
4. Teach Money Management:
Introduce your children to financial responsibility by giving them an allowance or encouraging them to earn money through chores. Discuss the importance of budgeting and saving for larger desires rather than spending impulsively. As financial author Dave Ramsey states, "You can’t win if you don’t play the right game." Teaching your children how to manage their wants and needs will create financially literate individuals, a topic I deeply explore at Your Self Coach Space / Empowered by Divine Strength
5. Promote Belief in Their Capabilities:
Encourage problem-solving and independence by allowing your children to tackle challenges on their own. Instead of offering immediate solutions, ask guiding questions that empower them to explore their options. This nurture of resilience helps children develop self-esteem and responsibility, according to studies from the American Psychological Association.
Summary
Raising responsible and less entitled children involves fostering empathy, teaching the value of sacrifice, and encouraging independence. By sharing your personal experiences and instilling core values like hard work and gratitude, you help guide them toward a fulfilling life.
Remember
"Point your children in the right direction; for every positive road, there is a negative." It’s your responsibility to help them avoid the negative paths that are always beckoning.
