Overcoming Fear and Embracing Learning: A Pathway to Personal Growth

Overcoming Fear and Embracing Learning: A Journey of Growth

In my university days, I faced a struggle that many students can relate to: academic pressure and the accompanying fear of failure. Despite often being labelled as the “not-so-smart kid” due to my grades, deep down, I knew I had the intelligence to succeed. My academic struggles were less about my capability and more about a specific fear: **the fear of learning new things**. As Albert Einstein wisely stated, “A person who never made a mistake never tried anything new.”

Every attempt to master a new subject would remind me that I had to learn all over again—a cycle I desperately wished to escape. I yearned for a one-time learning process, but instead, I was bogged down by constant reminders of my academic failures. Then came a pivotal moment: I was lying in my student hostel room while flunking my third year when I stumbled upon a beautiful lady on Facebook. The sparkle in her radiant smile captivated me, and before long, we connected and started dating—she was in her second year, while I was still grappling with my own.

One day, as I daydreamed about our beautiful future together, the reality of my academic situation hit me hard. If I continued to fail, I would have to repeat courses and sit alongside my girlfriend—an ego blow I wasn’t willing to endure. At that moment, I made a pledge to reclaim my narrative and end the self-fulfilling prophecy of being “not smart enough.”

After committing to study, my initial enthusiasm quickly faded as I realized that sheer effort alone wasn’t enough. Research shows that a focused strategy is more effective than just trying hard. I decided to ask my girlfriend about her coursework, pinpointing the classes I needed to excel in to avoid the embarrassment of failing alongside her. Armed with newfound purpose, I passed every single one of those courses, along with the ones I had previously struggled in.

While I may not have graduated at the top of my class, I did graduate, and more importantly, I faced my fear of learning. Just weeks before my graduation ceremony, I took on one final challenge: I wanted to find a romantic way to invite my girlfriend to my graduation party. Sure, fear crept in again, but I reminded myself of past victories. The day I walked across that stage was the best day of my life at the time —my girlfriend beaming with pride, her smile lighting up the room. I felt a rush of joy, not just for my graduation but for having faced my fears and emerged victorious. **I cracked the code of confronting my fears.**

To address the question: How can I control myself when I’m learning things that scare me? My challenge to you is: “Why try to control what you can confront head-on? From my experience, managing fear often leads to accepting it as an unavoidable part of life. Instead of trying to control your fears, find a compelling reason to confront them. Viktor Frankl’s insight resonates here: "When we are no longer able to change a situation, we are challenged to change ourselves." For me, my relationship became that transformative anchor.

If something you’re learning scares you, it signals either a positive challenge that fosters growth or a negative one that conflicts with your values. Don’t shy away from learning; as Mahatma Gandhi said, “Live as if you were to die tomorrow. Learn as if you were to live forever.” Knowledge is the only true power.

**Once you identify a strong reason to confront your fear**, let that motivation serve as your anchor when anxiety arises. Delve into what fascinates you about learning—what sparked your curiosity in the first place. You may find that what you thought was fear is actually an opportunity for growth. Remember, knowledge is power, and **it's your choice to focus on the positive.**
